Already have a logo? You can turn it into a custom 3D patch without creating an entirely new design.
With the OctoPatches online designer, you can upload your existing artwork, choose your patch size, customize the background color, adjust raised details, and preview the finished patch before ordering.
In this tutorial, we're using the OctoPatches logo to demonstrate the process. We'll also show you a couple of tricks for controlling the raised areas and adding selective gloss to your artwork.
The best part? You can experiment with the design and approve your proof online without waiting for a separate proofing email.

Open the OctoPatches designer and turn your own logo into a custom patch.
Turn Your Logo Into a Patch1. Start With Your Existing Logo
Visit the Your Logo Is the Patch page and continue into the online designer.
This workflow is designed for customers who want their actual logo or artwork to become the shape of the patch, rather than placing it on a separate background shape like a rectangle or circle.
Upload your existing artwork to get started. Your business logo, team emblem, or custom graphic becomes the starting point for the patch.
PRO TIP: Start with the cleanest, highest-resolution version of your logo available. Sharp edges and readable details give you a better starting point than a blurry screenshot.
2. Choose Your Patch Size
Once your logo is uploaded, the next step is choosing the size of your finished patch.
Think about the product you're planning to decorate. A patch designed for the front of a trucker hat may need different dimensions than one intended for a tote bag, apron, or other item.
Use the size controls in the designer to adjust the dimensions of your patch.
Check that the design will fit comfortably on the item you're decorating and that smaller details will still be visible at the finished size.
PRO TIP: Don't judge your patch only while zoomed in. Consider how large the smallest lettering and design details will actually be on the finished product.
3. Choose Your Background Color
Next, it's time to choose the background color.
The OctoPatches designer lets you experiment with different colors to find one that complements your logo and the products you're decorating.
You might choose a color that matches your artwork, creates contrast, or helps specific elements stand out.
For our design, we chose black because it creates contrast with the bright orange lettering and colorful octopus artwork.
Try a few combinations before moving on. Sometimes a simple color change makes a much bigger difference than you'd expect.
4. Customize the Raised Areas of Your Logo
Here's where things get interesting.
Instead of treating the uploaded logo as a completely flat image, you can customize which portions of the artwork appear more raised.
The designer uses a height representation to show the relative height of different parts of the design.
The whiter an area appears in the height representation, the more raised that portion of the patch will be.
This allows you to emphasize the parts of your logo that matter most.
For example, you might want your business name or central graphic to appear more prominent while other elements stay lower.
Experiment with the available height controls and inspect how the different areas respond.
PRO TIP: Not every part of your design needs maximum height. Varying the raised details can create separation and make the finished patch more interesting.
5. Optional: Add Gloss to Specific Areas
This next step is completely optional.
If you like the way your patch looks without a glossy finish, you can skip this section and go directly to the 3D Preview.
But if you want to experiment with another visual effect, try adding selective gloss to specific parts of your artwork.
In our example, we selected just the word "Patches" and adjusted its glossy appearance.
This creates a contrast between the selected lettering and the rest of the design.
You can experiment with different parts of your logo, such as lettering, a symbol, or a central graphic.
PRO TIP: Gloss works best when it's intentional. Highlighting one part of a design can help draw attention to that detail.
6. Update and Inspect Your 3D Preview
Once you're happy with the size, colors, and dimensional details, open the 3D Preview.
If you skipped the optional gloss step, you can move directly here.
Update the preview to see how your artwork comes together as a finished custom patch.
Rotate the design and inspect it from different angles. Pay attention to the raised lettering, smaller details, colors, and any glossy areas you may have added.
If something doesn't look quite right, return to the relevant design controls and make adjustments before finalizing.
Remember that the 3D rendering is a preview. The appearance of the final manufactured patch may vary slightly.
7. Review Your Design and Continue to Order
Once you're satisfied with the preview, review the final design and available ordering choices.
Double-check your patch dimensions, background color, raised details, and any optional finish adjustments.
OctoPatches lets you preview and approve your design online without waiting for a separate proofing email.
When everything looks right, continue through the ordering process.
One Logo. Plenty of Possibilities.
One of the best parts of creating a custom patch online is being able to experiment with your design.
The same logo can look completely different when you change its size, background color, raised details, or surface finish.
You can create a bold, colorful patch for a trucker hat or experiment with a more understated look for another product.
And you can see how those design decisions affect the patch before ordering.
